Anxiety is a common mental illness in many countries. In the US, around 18 % of the population suffers from anxiety symptoms every year. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, there are several different factors which can lead to anxiety, like a shocking life event, genetics, personality etc. It affects about 40 million adults in America but only about 36% of them undergo treatment. Some of the well-known anxiety treatments involve transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), medication, therapy and alternative treatments like meditation which is what we are going to cover in this article.
“Single Session Mindfulness Meditation Reduces Aortic Pulsatile Load and Anxiety in Mild to Moderately Anxious Adults” is a study with leading author Ph.D. John Durocher and is presented during the Experimental Biology meeting during April at the annual meeting of the American Physiological Society. There are also other studies who have monitored the effects of meditation in anxiety but this is the first study dealing with the effects of a single mindfulness meditation session.
Researchers analyzed the components which are connected with the cardiovascular performance from 14 participants who had increased anxiety but on the other hand, they had normal blood pressure. Components analyzed included heart rate, arterial rigidity, blood pressure in the aorta and blood pressure in general.
Anxiety is proved to have its role in the development of cardiovascular diseases. One of the CVD markers, arterial rigidity, can increase as a result of depression, temporary and long-term anxiety, job strain etc. From the research, experts concluded that even a single mindfulness meditation session helps the anxiety-suffering participants to improve. In few words, this type of meditation gives priority to the concentration on breathing and recognition of one’s thoughts. The decline of anxiety was very noticeable after one hour from meditation but not only this as researchers monitored that even after a week, the anxiety levels were lower. Furthermore, experts also measured the mechanical stress levels one hour after meditation which also appeared to be reduced. A single session of mindfulness meditation helps to lower the stress levels of brain and kidneys as well as preventing someone from having high blood pressure.
Researchers are convinced that the results of the study can be a good indicator for better future therapies according to anxiety. Not only this, but an added positive fact about this study is that the majority of 14 participants have said that they continued to practice the meditation practices and that the anxiety continued to reduce even after the study’s monitoring period. Why not consider this interesting practice? It is a session with no costs and everyone can do it by themselves. One should take some time to be only with themselves not only to think in a clearer and calm way but apparently to also improve your health.
